Abstract/Summary:
Students spend a majority of their writing lives on social media sites or texting on their phones. Although composition instructors often use these technologies to tap into what students already know about the writing process, there is no guarantee that this knowledge will translate into better academic papers. According to the Learning Transfer Theory, students will transfer learning from one context to another based on a perceived similarity. This case study examines the similarities students see between social and academic writing and how those similarities typically lead to variations of the five-paragraph essay.
