Abstract/Summary:
Most children traveling in a motor vehicle on United States roadways are incorrectly restrained in their child safety seat (CSS). Incorrect use of a CSS significantly increases a child's risk of serious or fatal injury in the event of a motor vehicle crash.; This study evaluated the effectiveness of an educational intervention about best practices for CSS. The education was presented to a convenience sample of 34 parents of a child less than one year of age, who presented to a health care setting for the purpose of a well-child visit. Participants' pre- and post-intervention technique of CSS use and installation was assessed and compared.; Participants' post-intervention technique of CSS use revealed statistically significant improvement. Educational guidance about best practices for CSS use during the well-child visit can be an effective intervention in promoting protection of the child motor vehicle passenger.
