Abstract/Summary:
This research project explored how to most effectively design and deliver risk management curriculum to postsecondary outdoor adventure students. The study involved interviewing both outdoor adventure program directors and faculty from postsecondary outdoor adventure programs. Pre-determined questions were used to guide dialogue between the researcher and interviewees. The results reflected both industry and educational institute beliefs and practices regarding risk management in the outdoor adventure field. Findings, synthesized with the literature and the researcher's knowledge and experience of the outdoor adventure industry, were used to create a generic risk management model (RMM) to be used in the design of postsecondary curriculum. The RMM outlines steps to be considered for both curriculum design and delivery. Results were presented to the faculty of the sponsoring organization and recommendations were made collaboratively with the researcher as to how the RMM can be incorporated into current and future program and course offerings.
