Abstract/Summary:
The subject of this thesis deals with the dynamic of periurban localities in relation to agricultural spaces and the construction of a multifunctional profile on these spaces, all in the general context of local community sustainable development. This thesis targets the multifunctionality of periurban agricultural space, with particular attention being paid to functions that are pursued simultaneously on these spaces.; The thesis is presented in the form of a set of articles preceded by a substantial introduction and a second chapter in which the principal aspects of the Quebec and Montreal contexts relating to the legislation of land-use planning and agricultural land protection and the principal actors at the regional and sub-regional levels. The first of three articles deals with the multifunctionality of periurban agricultural space, in the context of the dynamic of localities, prior to exploring the characteristics of one function in particular, that of agrotourism based on orchard farming. In the second article, an analysis of the role of different actors in the development of a specific orientation---agrotourism based on apple farming---is presented for two localities in the periurban zone of Montreal (Mont Saint Hilaire et St. Joseph du Lac). Finally, the third article explores the planning and management approaches that are possible in these periurban agricultural spaces; this article reviews and synthesizes all of the information used in the thesis in order to identify and propose a set of reflections and conclusions. In this article, the dynamism of each of the periurban localities is revealed in relation to agrotourism activities. It also deals with the implications of multifunctionality for land-use planning of the periurban agricultural zone and for planning the development of these areas in order to construct processes and activities that respond to the imperatives of sustainable development. This set of three articles is completed by a set of conclusions. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
