Abstract/Summary:
The following research was conducted to determine the characteristics that define successful community-based tourism in Botswana. Community-based participatory programs have been in operation for over four decades, yet problems remain with their implementation. Although there is a substantial amount of research on "best practices" for community-based tourism, challenges seem to remain in spite of their successful implementation. There are reports that community-based tourism has been successful in Botswana. In particular, it has been suggested that the Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust of Botswana is one such example. The current research seeks to determine the basis of this success. Information was obtained from interviews with stakeholders associated with the Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust to discover what individuals and groups perceive has been done correctly and where there is need for improvement. The resulting conclusions may be useful in improving community-based operations in Botswana and help shape successful models of community-based tourism elsewhere.
