Abstract/Summary:
This research explored the potential benefits of outsourcing clinical packaging operations in the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmaceutical companies need to devote most of their capital to drug development; hence they must achieve a high level of efficiency in downstream processes such as, manufacturing, packaging, testing, and distributing their products. These processes involve specialized skills, resources, and expertise; therefore, maintaining them all in-house may not be cost-effective. Outsourcing pharmaceutical processes is driven by two factors: maintaining profitability and keeping up with the latest technology. As pharmaceutical development becomes more and more expensive, it becomes increasingly difficult for even the largest companies to maintain a workforce with expertise in all areas from product conception to distribution. Also, pharmaceutical companies now compete in a global market and must have the capital available to quickly meet regional requirements and regulations.
