| This thesis is focused on the fabrication of GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum (MQW) well spatial light modulators (SLMs) and their application as binary photonic switches. Two types of switches are investigated: the binary amplitude modulator and the binary phase modulator. The theory of operation for both devices is discussed, beginning with a general introduction to MQW structures and ending with how each device can switch an optical signal. Fabrication of spatial light modulators is described, along with the results of spectral and electrical tests of the devices. Implementation of the amplitude modulator and the phase modulator as a photonic switch is discussed, as well other applications for SLMs in general such as the optical correlator. |
