Abstract/Summary:
Product design is the cornerstone of innovation, and with break through technologies in master model and assembly management, portfolio engineering, industrial design and hybrid modeling, Unigraphics provides a complete set of solutions for innovation in a virtual product development environment.; This thesis identifies and illustrates functions that are important to efficient and effective design. The intent is to identify the modeling techniques that are efficient in design creation and that maintain associativity. It also focuses on the functions that you need to design and manufacture sheet metal parts along with sheet metal basics and common shapes. Unigraphics sheet metal features are fully parametric and create complex part geometry that is capable of modeling itself in various formed and unformed shapes. IDEAS concept of designing sheet metal is discussed too.; Unigraphics as a CAD tool is used to develop a geometrical 3D Assembly model including component parts. One component, the crank, is subjected to linear and nonlinear analysis using PATRAN as a Pre and Post Processor, NASTRAN for the solution phase. Applying the same boundary conditions on the crank the linear case results shows three times the stress amount when nonlinear case is applied, besides the nonlinear result case shows high stress areas that are not highlighted in the linear case. The nonlinear phenomena are discussed through out the analysis.; Optimization as a geometry-based or FE-based in Pro/Engineer, Pro/Mechanica is discussed; a notch plate example is used for demonstration. The p-method element formulation is discussed against the h-method.; Data management is another important consideration when designing products, especially in configuring a product assembly and locating all of the associated part revisions. IMAN as a Product Data Management is used to help manage all the processes, applications and the information required to design, manufacture, and support a product throughout its life. Metaphase is another PDM system that competes with IMAN and developed by SDRC is also discussed.
