Abstract/Summary:
In the present study, a methodology has been developed to determine the global set of optimal solutions for a process and locally optimize the process flowsheet. The allyl chloride case has been used as an example to demonstrate the developed methodology. Determination of the global set of optimal process flowsheets enables the engineer to choose the most optimal process depending on criteria such as amount of product required, minimizing the amount of waste, or depending on the overall cost of the process.;The synthesis of the problem generated 24 flowsheet structures. The total annual costs for the most optimal process is ;The conclusions regarding the allyl chloride process and the results obtained from SYNPHONY(TM) have been discussed. Recommendations for improving the present software have been made.;Pollution prevention by process modification has been studied for the allyl chloride process. The cost of the operating units was estimated using SINET(TM). The fixed capital costs, operating costs and the variable costs associated with these has been calculated. The global set of optimal solutions for the allyl chloride process has been determined using SYNPHONY(TM), a process optimization software.
