| This work provides explanation of methods used to delineate a wellhead protection area (WHPA) for a riverbank infiltration (RBI) well.;The quantitative analysis is based on methods established in the Wellhead Protection Guide for Kentucky (Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet, 1996), and defines three levels of wellhead protection. The analysis includes identification of hydrogeologic boundaries, supporting calculations, and a sample application of a numerical model.;The use of conventional calculations is compared to sample results of the numerical model. In this work, results of conventional calculations are generally conservative solutions when compared to the numerical model.;The methods are described and illustrated as a case study applied to an RBI well along the Ohio River at Louisville, Kentucky. The study focuses on the quantitative components required to define the WHPA and reserves the regulatory components for other works. |
