Abstract/Summary:
There are two main reasons to justify the development and marketing of electric vehicles. First and most importantly, they will ensure cleaner air in our cities and secondly, they will reduce our dependency on imported oil.; Maximizing the efficiency of an electric vehicle is one way to address the problem of vehicle range. The control technique used in this work is a slip frequency control. A maximum efficiency algorithm was derived by Fan (12) specifically to address the range problems of electric vehicles. The type of controller chosen for the kernel of the slip frequency control scheme was a fuzzy logic controller. It was first turned in the software simulation packages MATLAB and SIMULINK, implemented with the help of Motorola's Knowledge Base Generator in assembly language and then transferred to the system microcontroller. This project was divided into two main research activities: the computer simulation and the experimental implementation.; In this study the electrical motor (induction machine) is controlled using the maximum efficiency algorithm, which serves as an initial setpoint for the slip frequency control. A real-time maximum efficiency fuzzy logic controller was implemented to provide the speed control for the EV propulsion system. Six fuzzy controllers were employed in separate instances to see which controller gave the best results. Twenty different fuzzy inference systems were tested in total. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
