Abstract/Summary:
The primary purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the five cultural landscape factors of historic context, design of the landscape, the site, town plan, and architecture of two early-twentieth century coal-mining communities that were Thurber, Texas and Buxton, Iowa as evidenced by their town plans of 1919 and 1920, their mature stage of development. Included in this purpose is the comparison of these five aforementioned cultural landscape factors as evidenced in Thurber's built landscape to the same five cultural landscape factors as evidenced in Buxton, Iowa. Although Thurber and Buxton no longer exist as communities and while both differed in regard to these five factors, it was hypothesized that these differences were only nominal. This study concludes that the cultural landscape characteristics of a community can be evaluated as both similar and dissimilar depending upon the criteria which are used.
