Abstract/Summary:
Four species of Trichogramma Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) are known from Japan: Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead, T. papilionis Nagarkatti, T. dendrolimi Matsumura and T. chilonis Ishii and two new species described herein as T. cultella Jose and T. umera Jose. The taxonomic history of Trichogramma in Japan is assessed along with the taxonomic difficulties prevalent to the genus. Previously known species are reviewed with respect to hosts, biological control uses, and distinguishing characters of the male genital capsule. Definitive anatomical features of the male genitalia were captured for T. papilionis, T. dendrolimi, and T. chilonis with scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs, available for the first time. A key to the species extant in Japan (at the time of this writing) is provided.
