| The project Sensual Universe is a series of eight paintings re-investigating and expanding on themes of the feminine surreal. Each painting in the series embodies a personal vision influenced by an historical and contemporary framework. Elements of Asian aesthetics from Tibet, Japan, and India were combined with a Western sensibility within a dreamlike landscape space. One of the core challenges of the project was the integration of these disparate elements. In addition to the assimilation of sources, the paint handling became more detailed and precise as the need for a wider and more accurate read of the work evolved. Richly glazed surfaces, juxtaposed with waxy forms and patterned passages, developed simultaneously to include an expanding surrealistic vocabulary within a hybrid space. The sense of threat and danger within the narrative continued to gain momentum as I began to understand and uncover the deeper, darker issues influencing my work. |
