Abstract/Summary:
The author argues that musical theater deserves a play in the canon of dramatic literature. Musical theater is compared to verse play and liturgy, two similar forms that are already studied in the academy. Finally, a new aesthetic for the musical, based on the aesthetics of other dramatic literature, is offered. A possible course in musical theater as text is outlined. Instructor notes for several musicals and a sample course schedule is offered.
