Abstract/Summary:
This study takes a comparative approach examining the importance of US 395 to the regions it travels through. In looking at how regional historical geography has been shaped by the road's presence, I conclude that US 395 is not a single, unifying road, but a series of paved stretches that bind the many regions US 395 travels through to the larger national and global economy. The methodology examines the visible landscape and historical geography of the seven major regions the road travels through, and the importance of US 395 to each. Every realm of the road sees the highway playing a different role, but the unique connection to the larger national and global economy is key in understanding the transport network of which the road is a part and the landscape that formed around it.
