Abstract/Summary:
Art Deco developed early in the twentieth century from an amalgamation of contemporary art styles, ancient cultures, political and social changes, and technological advances. Designers borrowed characteristics from contemporary art and early cultures and combined them with modern technology, using similar overall themes but simplifying them. Animals and plants became more linear and geometric figures were popular. Themes stressing power, work, and commerce were prevalent. Exotic and common materials were used, with plastic making its first appearance in the decorative arena. Architecture developed in three major decorative sub-styles: zigzag, classical moderne, and streamline moderne. This work looks at the general characteristics of Art Deco, and in particular examines the ornamental qualities of the three architectural sub-styles.
