Abstract/Summary:
This thesis aims at identifying the fundamental human rights of a Nigerian woman against domestic violence by using as authoritative the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and international instruments such as women's Conventions adopted as law in Nigeria. It establishes that a change in laws will not suffice by itself to solve the problem of domestic violence and to reduce spousal battery in Nigeria. This thesis further contends that the laws in Nigeria are presently available for the protection of victims of domestic violence, and that the only hindrance to actualising these rights consists of the lack of awareness of the existence of their rights against this crime and the socio-cultural stereotypes that surrounds gender-related issues in Nigeria.; In recognising this, this thesis also considers practical alternative modes of addressing spousal abuse in Nigeria. To this end, it considers the method adopted by countries such as Canada and the United States.
