Abstract/Summary:
The development of electronic commerce and the global information infrastructure is at a critical juncture. Today, most forms of information can be stored and processed electronically. This means a wide variety of information with varying economic values and privacy aspects will have to be secured. Cryptography plays an essential role in protecting electronic information against threats from a variety of potential attackers. While cryptography is not the only factor contributing to electronic security, it represents a significant means whereby information can be protected. In order to safeguard information and transactions on-line, national governments and international organizations must play a role in the development of this technology. Key escrowing technology, digital signature technology, certification authorities, and Public Key Infrastructures are all areas where governments can develop standards. These standards will help protect consumers, maintain democracy and sovereignty, and promote e-commerce in general.
