Abstract/Summary:
This thesis project was undertaken at the request of the Safety Committee of Montana Tech of the University of Montana in order to establish baseline data about campus safety perceptions and safety awareness. The objectives of this research were to collect and analyze data through a survey to determine perceptions of safety on campus, determine knowledge about safety and prevention-related services already in place on campus, and obtain suggestions for making the campus safer.;After collaborating extensively with the Safety Committee to develop the survey instrument, approval from the Institutional Review Board of the University of Montana System was obtained. During Spring Semester 2011, members of the campus community were invited to participate. Invitees were all on-campus students, staff, and faculty. Of the 3,373 individuals invited through campus email, 449 completed the online survey. The respondents included 294 students, 71 faculty members, and 76 staff members. A comparison of demographics between the respondent populations and the corresponding campus populations suggests the respondents are reasonably representative.;The overall results of this study indicated that the campus community perceives Montana Tech as a safe campus. The majority of respondents indicated that they feel safe in a variety of areas on campus and during different times of the day.;Keywords: Campus Safety, Safety Awareness, Survey...
