Abstract/Summary:
Purpose. To examine age, sex, geographic and temporal trends in leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) levels in Canadian adults from 1981 to 1998 using five national surveys, and to determine if components of health-related physical fitness can prospectively predict perceived health status over seven years.;Methods. Data from the 1981 Canada Fitness Survey (CFS), 1988 Campbell's Survey on Well-Being (CSWB), and the 1994, 1996 and 1998 National Population Health Surveys were used to examine trends in LTPA. Daily leisure-time activity energy expenditures (AEE) were estimated from 19 common physical activities and general linear models were used to examine the trends. To determine if health-related physical fitness could predict perceived health status, physical measures from the 1981 CFS, and the questionnaire from 1988 CSWB were used. Using principal components analysis, four components of MSF (push-ups, sit-ups, grip strength, and sit-and-reach flexibility) were reduced to one factor. Logistic regression was used to determine if morphological fitness (Body Mass Index (BMI)), cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) and musculoskeletal fitness could predict perceived health status seven years later.
