Abstract/Summary:
The Study---Rubrics Assessment as an Instructional Illumination of Bhutanese Student Writing---explored how Bhutanese grade seven and eight teachers of English respond and utilize rubrics to modify their instruction and assessment practices. A focus group consisting of five teachers from two high schools and a junior high was used. The data for the study was generated through focus group discussions, individual interviews, classroom visits, as well as reflections on my own teaching experiences.; Based on my findings I concluded that: (a) teachers need to be further trained to develop and use rubrics, (b) teachers need to be trained to teach writing through the writing process approach, and (c) schools need to adopt a new outlook towards writing.; These steps would assure the successful implementation of rubrics and help both teachers and students to use writing to learn while learning to write.; Finally, several recommendations are included for those interested in pursuing further studies in this area.
