Abstract/Summary:
This study expands on the area of coach, expert and novice cognitive differences in the sport domain of basketball by utilizing a video sorting task. This technique attempts to provide insight to the cognitive processes at a deeper and more defined level than previous studies, due to the introduction of movement related information obtained through viewing basketball video clips. The study proposes to demonstrate that coaches sort at a deeper more defined level than players, and players sort on a deeper and more defined level than novices. These levels will be exhibited based on folders in which the subjects will sort the clips and the terms utilized by the subjects when describing the contents of the folders.; The findings indicate that novices did not seem to use the same cognitive strategies utilized by the experts. Novices seemed to focus more globally on a game situation when processing cues from the video clips. Coaches seem to process information more indepth, in that they integrate all aspects of the game. Experts exhibited a similar type of processing as the coaches but not in as much depth. Both coaches and experts tended to sort with regards to the game action and focus on all aspects of the game, from basic skills to offensive and defensive fundamentals, to the interpretation of game play. Novices sorted with regards to basic skill presentation with reference to good and poor defense based on loss of possession of the ball.; It appears from the results that coaches and players use more specific terms than novices, who use more general terms. Coaches seem to have a more similar cognitive strategy knowledge base to players than novices. Novices have similar strategies, but not to the same degree as the players because of their lack of knowledge.
