Some scholars have pointed out that in the initial sports learning stage, the technical level of athletes plays a leading role to the competition outcome. When technical skills of athletes reach the necessary level, competition results mainly depend on the mentality of athletes. Therefore,it is very necessary for researchers to accurately predict mental states of trainers no matter they take beginners or athletes with certain technical level as research objects. With the continuous development of training reforms, scholars have always discussed the hot topic of the improvement of skills.Self-talk is the main component of sports psychology. Therefore, this paper takes self-talk as the main line for free throw performance of basketball to establish different types of self-talk to be used by athletes of different levels on the basis of previous studies.Athletes with different cognitive styles should use different types of self-talk.This paper also explores ways for self-talk of different types used by athletes in free throw performance of basketball. The experiment conclusions are as follows:Experiment 1: This experiment takes self-talk as the independent variable and free throw performance of basketball as the dependent variable to do t-test analysis of relevant samples and the results show that self-talk has positive impacts on free throw performance of basketball and that athletes can improve their free throw performance by using self-talk.Experiment 2: This experiment takes free throw performance of basketball as the dependent variable to do repeated measurement variance analysis and the results show that different types of self-talk have significantly different influence on athletes of different grades and that the influence of self-talk on first-grade athletes and second-grade athletes is significantly different. There is no significant difference between the two types of self-talk used by first-grade athletes. For second-grade athletes, two different types of self-talk show significant difference.Second-grade athletes use targeted self-talk better than self-talk of motivation type in their free throw of basketball.Experiment 3: This experiment takes free throw performance of basketball as the dependent variable to do repeated variance analysis and the results shows thatdifferent cognitive styles and self-talks of different types have significant difference. For field-independent athletes, two types of self-talk have significant difference.Athletes using targeted self-talk during their free throw can obtain better effects. For field-dependent athletes, two types of self-talk have significant difference. Conclusions: 1.Basketball players using self-talk do better in terms of free throw performance than those who do not use self-talk.2.The application of self-talk of different types by basketball players during their free throw shows significant difference to athletes of different grades.3.Basketball players of different cognitive styles have significant difference in their free throw when they use different self-talk types.
