Abstract/Summary:
The use of public funds to build new sports stadiums is currently done under the auspices of urban redevelopment. Positive economic impact from new facilities is not generally supported by economists, thus examination of non-economic, social factors are an important contribution to the stadium debate. Within the context of non-economic factors, the impact on the youth population is not often considered. 93 youth from a mid-size city high school were surveyed to determine the impact of two recently built stadiums on their lives, and 12 youth activity leaders were interviewed to examine the on youth from their vantage point. Quantitative analysis of the survey data and content analysis of the interview data revealed some elements of positive impact, but the overall outcome suggests that both facilities have not achieved their full potential in serving as a resource for the youth in the city. Increased inclusion of culturally diverse communities through the use of partnerships, and addressing the varied interests of youth are recommendations for future facility outreach and activity.
