Abstract/Summary:
This study was designed to study the effect of a short-term service-learning experience on the development of responsible citizenship in a group of community college students. Four different academic classes were used that currently had a service-learning component as part of the course curriculum. The Scale of Service Learning Involvement (Olney, 1994) based on the Service Learning Model (Delve, Mintz & Stewart, 1990) was used to measure students' progress through three developmental phases based on responsible citizenship. The results indicate that there was no significant developmental gain on an any of the three phases, but in additional questions asked during the postest, participants did convey their desire to participate in some sort of community service in the future. The results also indicate that there may have been some confusion by participants as to the definition of citizenship, which may be linked to the large number of students at this community college that are foreign born.
