The purpose of this study is to qualitatively identify and describe the cognitive strategies used by 6 elite ultra-marathon cyclists (Female = 2, Male = 4) who have successfully completed the Race Across America (RAAM) road race. Through an inductive content analysis of interview transcriptions, eight cognitive strategies were identified. These strategies include attentional strategies (associative and dissociative), self-talk strategies, goal setting, simulation training, accepting adversity, social support, self-confidence, and meditative state. The results reveal a complex use of multiple strategies employed by cyclists to overcome obstacles and to maintain an appropriate level of motivation. Implications for future research are discussed. |
