Abstract/Summary:
The continuous technological innovations forced organizations to seek better operational approaches. The problem addressed here lies in the fact that most organizations do not properly align their supply chain and technology strategies with their industry's demand patterns to achieve higher performance. The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study was to advance the understanding related to the moderating effects of demand uncertainty on supply chain and technology strategies. An online Survey Monkey instrument was used to collect data from a cross sectional randomly selected total sample of 3225 US manufacturing companies. The PLS path analysis was conducted for a usable sample size of 234 participants. The study findings showed that statistically significant evidence was found indicating that, volatile demand positively moderates the associations of flexible technology and agile supply chain strategies on the supply chain performance with respective (beta --values) of, beta =.435, p < .01, and beta =.372, p < .01. Similarly, statistically significant evidence was found indicating that, stable demand positively moderates the associations of lean supply chain and efficient technology strategies on the supply chain performance with respective (beta --values) of, beta =.307, p < .01, and beta =.545, p < .01. However, there is no sufficient statistical evidence to support the rejection of the hypothesis claiming that there is no moderating effect of demand uncertainty on the supply chain performance regardless of the types of alignments between the supply chain and technology strategies with beta =.023, p = .698 > .01, for stable demand patterns and beta =.079, p = .065 > 0.01 for volatile demand patterns. The study made significant contribution to theory by uncovering the gap and advancing knowledge related to the moderating effect of demand uncertainty on the supply chain and technology strategies alignments. For practical application, the study advised managers to gainfully align their supply chain and technology strategies according to their industry's demand patterns so higher performance can be achieved. For future research, it is recommended to replicate the study with a larger sample size and examine the impact of other potential mediators and emerging technologies that might affect various strategies alignments.
