Abstract/Summary:
Given the intense competition in the business world, the effective coordination and efficient maintenance of interorganizational information exchange channels are extremely important. The Internet, with its fast growing pace, is a promising platform to exchange information along the business channels. To that end, no significant research has been done to analyze the factors affecting the adoption of Internet technology to exchange information along the supply chain. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to determine the factors that are critical to organizations in their adoption decision of Internet-based interorganizational information systems (IBIS). Several theories were examined in the process of developing the research model. Diffusion of innovation theory, theory of exchange, and technology acceptance model (TAM) were among them.; Research methodology used in this study was mainly survey. Data were collected from questionnaires sent to members of the Council of Logistics Management in the United States. Structural equation modeling was the statistical methodology used in hypothesis testing. The results of the analyses indicate that out of several factors included in the study, four factors were found to significantly affect the adoption decision of IBIS. These factors are competitors' pressure, establishing costs, trust, and perceived benefits. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed. The findings of this research help in initiating a new research stream concerned with understanding issues related to IBIS. Moreover, the results can significantly affect organizations in their efforts to utilize Internet technology to reduce cycle time while improving efficiency and profitability.
