Abstract/Summary:
The synthesis and structure-property relationships of liquid crystals has been an area of active research interest due to the numerous practical applications. Recently, development of transition metal containing liquid crystals has received tremendous attention because it combines the practicality of liquid crystal research with the diversity of transition metal chemistry. Introducing transition metals into liquid crystalline materials may have profound effect on the physical characteristics of these advanced materials with useful applications (molecular electronics, new electrical and magnetic switches, conductors, new optical devices etc.).;The focus of this research has been the synthesis of novel ferrocene-containing liquid crystalline materials. Four new series of disubstituted ferrocenyl compounds have been synthesized and their liquid crystal properties studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy and x-ray diffraction techniques. The research results indicate a gradual evolution towards successful development of stable ambient temperature liquid crystalline compounds containing ferrocene. To start with, several compounds in the series of 1,1...
