Abstract/Summary:
In Part I, a brief introduction to liquid crystal monomers and polymers is given.;In Part III, the partition function of a simplified 2D discrete model of polar (liquid crystal) polymer proposed by Lam (Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst. 155, 531 (1988)) is derived. The 2D model can easily be reduced to a 1D model by letting the width of the hairpin be zero. In the 1D case, the exact solution of the partition function, the susceptibility and other properties are discussed.;In Part II, the ab initio theory of linear and nonlinear optics of liquid crystals proposed by Lam et al. (Phys. Rev. A 37, 3496 (1988)) is generalized to include three internal vector coordinates. Both frequency and temperature dependence of refractive indices is derived. The result is compared with the experimental data measured by Mitra et al. (Liq. Cryst. 3, 123 (1988)). Good agreements with experiments are found.
