The project involves the preservation of a colored slide collection of the 254 Texas county courthouses in a laserdisc format. A textual tutorial accompanies the laserdisc in a HyperCard program on the Macintosh computer. A barcoded program is an alternate tutorial. Visual features of the courthouses include their several views, architectural details, interiors, and jails. Information comprises dominant architectural styles, major architects, construction dates, and materials used. The symbolic role of the courthouse in expressing the people's community spirit and conceptions of patriotism and aesthetics is examined. The purpose of the project was to preserve in a permanent format and visual context one aspect of architecture reflecting a people's heritage. |
