Abstract/Summary:
Subsynchronous resonance is a phenomenon which occurs in a host of power system configurations. Often subsynchronous oscillations initiate torsional interactions between the masses of a multimass turbine-generator. In many systems the mechanical shaft oscillations must be measured for control purposes.; In this thesis, a new technique is developed to determine the amplitude of these oscillations. The technique is based on the Fourier Transform of the machine's terminal voltage. A useful relation between the voltage frequency spectrum and the mechanical oscillation amplitudes is derived and tested. Verification of the theory is carried out using EMTDC simulation for a variety of network configurations.
