Abstract/Summary:
The linkage between language and the nation can be found in many states past and present. It is a relationship that begs analysis: How and why do nations choose a national language? What are the effects of this relationship on both state formation agendas and on the national language? Furthermore, what are the effects of this relationship on the lives of the people within the state?;In this thesis, these questions are explored as they relate to the formation of the state of Malaysia. Three key spheres of the state are considered within this state-formation process: the social, political, and economic. State formation is an on-going process of change, and consequently, meets various points of crises. As such, in each of these spheres, the relationship between the state and language takes on particular and unique salience. Although not exclusively, education has been the key implementing agent of Malaysia's language and state policies, and as such, becomes a key focus in this analysis.;Data for this analysis is textual--economic reports, educational policy statements, government documents, newspapers, and other research conducted in Malaysia.;By examining the present relationship between language policy and state formation, a deeper understanding of both aspects and their relationship is achieved, and alternative strategies explored.
