This paper is based on the translation of Language Policy Challenges in Multi-Ethnic Malaysia(Chapters 5-6),an academic work written by Malaysian linguist Saran Kaur Gill. The primary purpose of this translation is providing the domestic language policy planners and researchers valuable academic materials. Moreover, the author can practice translation theories and skills through this project.According to the text typology(Reiss,1971),academic paper is a kind of informative text which focuses on delivering objective information.Under the guidance of this theory, this paper analyzed the language features of the source text and discussed the translation methods of informative text from three perspectives, namely vocabulary, sentence and discourse. In the lexical aspect, the paper begins with the translation of proper nouns and abbreviations as well as the compensation of culturally-loaded words;in the syntactic aspect,it mainly deals with passive sentences and complicated long sentences;in the textual aspect,it discusses the translation strategies of five textual cohesion approaches, that is,reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion.During the translation process, the author always keeps the translation principles of informative texts in mind, such as accuracy, objectivity, information integrity, strict logic and fluency. The analysis of specific cases in this report show that Reiss' text typology has a great guiding role in the translation of informative texts. It can help translators to analyze the source text, find suitable translation approaches and create high-quality translation that not only delivers the information precisely but accords with the expression habits in target language.Lastly, the translation report is expected to provide certain reference for future study of informative text translation.
