Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to determine and analyze the affects of culture shock in regards to second language acquisition, socio-economic status, a self-contained cultural past and gender among international English as second language learners. In order to achieve this purpose, four preliminary questions were posed: (1) Does culture shock affect English as a second language acquisition among international students? (2) Does socio-economic status affect English as a second language acquisition among international students? (3) Does a self-contained cultural past affect English as a second language acquisition among international students? (4) Does gender affect English as a second language acquisition among international students?;To gather the data, a four-step process was used. First, international students at Del Mar College, East and West Campuses were tested and surveyed. The pre-test and survey were administered in November 1993 and the post-test and survey were administered approximately two months after.
