As the Mandarin-learning craze continues to develop worldwide, more and more foreign students come to China, which brings us unprecedented opportunities and challenges. The experience of culture shock of the primary stage foreign students is one of the biggest challenges.Through analysis of questionnaires and interviews on overseas students in Grade I and II of Zhejiang University, three characteristics and the causes of the culture shock are concluded. It also suggests that the culture shock which foreign students experience in China should be classified exactly. The research shows that the culture shock is inevitable but can be solved by culture explanation on class and administration improvement. The main point of this thesis is that culture explanation on Mandarin class is one of the most efficient and direct way to reduce the culture shock. Based on the author's teaching fruit, four culture teaching principles are advanced which are understanding and comprehensive, practical and interesting, scattering and system planning, and focusing on essential culture issues. Three teaching methods are also recommended, which are questions and answers, comparative analysis, and role playing. Following this thought, this thesis discusses how Mandarin teachers react facing the culture shock. Under the analysis of the characteristics of the teachers' culture shock, the thesis presents that teachers should learn culture background knowledge as much as possible, and get prepared well for classes, control emotions facing culture differences, and stick to principles but be flexible on class.Through these research and discuss, hopefully this thesis can help overseas students to make a correct definition on their unadapted situation in the first period in China. This will avoid over anxiety or ignorance which may lead to the study in China suspended or failed. At the same time, it can also help Mandarin teachers to define students'abnormal behaviors correctly and classify them in order to make pointed and efficient teaching on class.
