Abstract/Summary:
This paper will endeavor to analyze and discuss the drive toward European unification and also the ultimate success or failure of the Maastricht Treaty. Specifically, historical and current efforts in regard to the European Monetary System (EMS), environmental regulations, barriers in language and culture and the increase in European unemployment will receive consideration. Furthermore, difficulties of policing the exchange of people and goods across borders and the emerging problem of legal and illegal immigration will be explored.;The goal of the European Community is to form an integrated market place where goods services and money move unhindered throughout the EC. Naturally, successful accomplishment of this goal will not be a very easy task. Various directives still must be passed by the European Community's parliament and agreement on numerous issues is impractical since European countries still are separated by language, culture and history.
