Abstract/Summary:
In job analysis the level of agreement among SMEs regarding which job behaviours are essential is often low. This makes it difficult for the job analyst to identify which job behaviours are essential. Hence, the focus of this research was to examine the source of rating differences among SMEs. This was done through an examination of three hypotheses. The first hypothesis examined was whether the use of absolute scales would improve the level of agreement among SMEs over relative scales. The second hypothesis dealt with the relationship between discretion and rating differences. Finally the third hypothesis examined was whether discretion would moderate the influence of individual and organizational difference variables on job analysis ratings.;The limitations and implications of the findings regarding the use of absolute scales, and the role of discretion in job analysis applications are discussed.
