The academic performance of college graduates who majored in mathematics but did not go into teaching was compared with the academic performance of college graduates who majored in mathematics and applied for mathematics teacher certification from 1988 through 1992 at Glassboro State College. The subjects were 130 graduates (82 non-certification, 48 certification). The comparison was based on overall grade point average and mathematics grade point average. The results indicated that there was a significant difference between the overall grade point averages of Glassboro State College graduates who majored in mathematics and did not go into teaching and those who majored in mathematics and applied for mathematics certification. Certification students had significantly higher overall grade point averages than non-certification students. There was no significant difference in overall grade point average with respect to gender and year of graduation. Also there was no significant difference in mathematics grade point average with respect to gender, year of graduation, or whether the student was certified or not. The results indicated that teacher certification graduates perform better than non-certification graduates at Glassboro State College.
