Urease can catalyze the rapid decomposition of urea. The presense of urease in human, animals, and environment has much negative effect.Urease inhibitors can inhibit the activity of urease, and control the decomposition of urea.Schiff base compounds have good biological and medicinal activities. Moreover,Schiff base compounds are a kind of interesting ligands, which can form versatile metal complexes with a large number of metal salts. In recent years,Schiff bases and their complexes have been found to have effective urease inhibitory activity.By combination of metal ions with Schiff bases to form metal complexes, and modify their coordination geometry and structures,to coopration well with urease activity center, may form a kind of new urease inhibitors. The paper reviewed the research background of urease inhibitors, and the application of Schiff bases on coordination chemistry and functional materials.Five Schiff base copper complexes, nine Schiff base zinc complexes, and three Schiff base nickel complexes have been prepared and characterized. The role of the self-assembly and influencing factors of the complexes have been discussed. The paper contains the following sections:1.Five copper complexes have been prepared with the Schiff bases derived from the reaction of 4-fluorosalicylaldehyde with several amines, and some secondary ligands, and copper salts. The complexes have been characterized by IR and UV spectra,as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction.2.Nine zinc complexes have been prepared with the Schiff bases derived from the reaction of 4-fluorosalicylaldehyde with several amines, and some secondary ligands, and zinc salts. The complexes have been characterized by IR and UV spectra,as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction.3.Three nickel complexes have been prepared with the Schiff bases derived from the reaction of 4-fluorosalicylaldehyde with several amines, and some secondary ligands, and nickel salts. The complexes have been characterized by IR and UV spectra,as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction.4.The urease inhibitory activity of the complexes have been studied.Four of the complexes have good activity, with IC50values of 0.14-9.4?mol/L.5.The interaction mode of the complexes with the urease activity center has been studied via molecular docking technique.
