With the massive mining of mineral resources, the process generates a large amount of solid waste piles to form tailings ponds.Tailings often behave the characteristics of particle dispersion and low shear strength, which are potential sources of danger. The research object of this paper is the Ximajiazi Tailings Dam,which has a large amount of slag piles in the reservoir and the height has exceeded the design elevation.Based on the site investigation and software such as GEOSTUDIO and MIDAS,the study establishes two-dimensional and three-dimensional computational models of the tailings dam under various operating conditions.meanwhile,The stability of the tailings dam was also evaluated in terms of seepage field, static stability and seismic dynamic response, respectively, and to provide theoretical support for the prevention of dam failure. The main research contents are as follows:(1)The SEEP module in GEOSTUDIO is used to establish a two-dimensional seepage model to calculate the position of the dam wetting line and the seepage flow of the dam body under normal and flood conditions. The results show that the overflow points of the wetting line and the measured wetting line are all on the initial dam, calculated wetting line and measured wetting line are in good agreement and can be adopted for subsequent calculations and provides basic data for subsequent calculations. In order to fully consider the inhomogeneity in the three-dimensional space of the tailings dam,the three-dimensional model of the tailings dam is established by using MIDAS software, and the position of the infiltration line under the normal water level and the flood water level is calculated. The overflow points are also on the initial dam.The tailings dam is stable under the action of seepage.(2)The SLOPE module in GEOSTUDIO is used to calculate the stability coefficients, the M-P method, the Bishop method, the Janbu method and the Ordinary method were applied to calculate the stability coefficients under normal conditions, flood conditions and special conditions, and the most dangerous sliding surface distribution map is obtained. The stability coefficients meet the specification requirements. The stability coefficient is calculated based on MIDAS software, and the strength reduction method is used to calculate the stability coefficient of the three-dimensional model, which is larger than that of the two-dimensional model and meets the safety requirements.(3)The QUAKE module of GEOSTUDIO software was used to simulate the two-dimensional seismic dynamic response, and it was found that no liquefaction occurred in the tailings dam.MIDAS software was used to simulate the three-dimensional seismic dynamic response, the results show that the stability of tailings dam is greatly affected by earthquakes.Through the above research,it is believed that the Ximajiazi tailings dam is in safe operation at present.
