Research On The Environmental Design Of Heritage Of Urban Industrial Wharf In The Base Of Place Memory

Since 1990,China has entered a period of industrial restructuring.Many waterfront plants that grew along with the wharfs has halted production or been moved away from city,resulting in a great number of industrial wharf heritage has been left in the waterfront city.Since the concept of ‘heritage of port industrial district’ was put forward in 1990 s,China has begun to pay attention to the research of the environmental renewal of urban industrial wharf heritage.Over the past 20 years,substantial research results and design practices have been accumulated in China.However,the environmental renewal of urban industrial wharf heritage is focused on the recovery for setting and function,leading to its cultural values has suffered serious damage.Especially in the process of environmental renewal,vast important Industrial elements were demolished and historical information was buried,resulting in the industrial spirit has been forgotten.On the other hand,due to the environmental renewal has caused the loss of place memory,people can’t emotionally resonate and produce sense of place identity,which makes the values of urban industrial wharf heritage incomprehensible.Passing down the place memory of urban industrial wharf heritage and ensuring the integrity of its values are of significant,which were the original intention of researches on the method for extracting and presenting the place memory of urban industrial wharf heritage.In this paper,firstly,the relations between the authenticity,place memory and value of urban industrial wharf heritage are interpreted.Form and design,materials and substance,use and function,traditions and techniques,location and setting,and spirit and feeling are six aspects for verifying the authenticity of industrial heritage,which are used for extracting the place memory of urban industrial wharf heritage and interpreting the memory features of it.Then,the focus of extracting results was summarized and the internal relations of various memory features were analyzed.Moreover,the presentation methods of place memory of urban industrial wharf heritage were summarized from design,material,function,technology,setting and spirit features by researching on multiple types of practice cases.Finally,taking the environmental renewal of packing plant area in Jingzhou foreign-built wharf as an example,the design and practices of environmental renewal focusing on extracting and passing down the place memory of packing plants were carried on.
