Since the implementation of the policy of college enrollment expansion in China, the number and the scale of colleges and universities has been growing rapidly and constantly, which bring forth lots of infrastructure construction projects being done. However,it doesn’t show a good achievement for colleges’ professional management in construction, manifested by slow progress, increased investment and other phenomena popular in universities.Furthermore,it shows the characteristics of the brittleness for colleges’ overall construction project management system, namely for lacking self-regulation ability, the project management system will collapse temporally failing to have its function of planning, controlling, directing and coordination working to cause project failure and management confusion, when in the face of changes and anomalies in the project environment. In order to help the university engineering construction managers to objectively recognize the problems in the field of engineering management, recognize and prevent risk, increase investment efficiency and finally improve the system and the level of project management, this paper conducts multiple case studies, based on three case project in K college,to find the reasons for failure of project management, revealing the root of brittleness of the engineering project management in colleges and universities.First of all,the thesis defines concepts of project management and management brittleness, characteristics of construction management in higher vocational colleges, introduces the theoretical and methodological basis of research on the system science, system brittleness, full life cycle project management, the internal management of colleges and universities, bureaucracy, case method and so on.Then, this paper takes the three cases as examples to analyze and demonstrate the root of the brittleness of project management in university construction projects. The demonstration process mainly adopts three strategies of case description strategy, pattern matching analysis technique and competitive explanation and elimination method special for case study method.Firstly, through comprehensive and in-depth case description, the problems existing in the project are found in the case, and the management effectiveness and brittleness phenomenon are evaluated. Then pattern matching method are used in combination with the practical situation of schools to carry out the causes of track, with the tracking results summarized as three dominant root cause, including the immaturity of life circle project manager system, the administerization of project management, and the bureaucratization of project management, and profound elaboration for its connotation has been made to demonstrate its internal validity with competitive interpretive elimination method. Finally, the paper constructs the project management brittle cause model, puts forward that the poor "coupling" between the subsystems, the "defectiveness" of the primary system, the "backwardness" of the root system and the "negativeness" of people related to projects is the hidden root of construction project management brittleness in colleges, explains operation mechanism of the brittleness cause model, and makes analysis on its universality. With the basis above, this paper finally concludes that the construction project management brittleness in public higher vocational colleges consists of the immaturity of life circle project manager system, which is the direct cause, the administerization of project management, which is the root cause, and the bureaucratization of project management, which increases the possibility and probability of project management failure in each case.
