Before the 1950 s,the global shipping market had been monopolized by the bulk carriers, however bulk carriers have its intrinsic limitations and disadvantages such as the capacity is comparatively smaller and the transportation efficiency is relatively lower. It was gradually difficult for bulk carriers to meet the need to transport huge scale of cargo under the wave of economic globalization. In that case, container ship was invented to undertake the complicated transportation task.Containerization can perfectly achieve the goal of container rail-sea intermodal transport, and brought a revolution in the marine carriage industry. In less than half a century since then,nearly90% of the world’s general groceries have been transported by container ship. The development trend of the modern large and automatic container ships requires the stowage system should possess the enormous scale,highly-precise and complex constrained problem in a short time.It is a complex and time-consuming task for traditional manual stowage system.Automation stowage solutions are urgently needed. In this paper, the intricate problem of multi-port stowage of ultra-large container ships on ocean-going mainlines was studied, the main work consists of these three parts.1)Research on the solution method for the precise floating condition, strength and stability of container ships. After analysing the structural characteristics of the container ship, the ship’s trim, stability, shear force and bending moment are calculated by means of the iterative method, based on the hydrostatic parameters and Bonjean curves to provide the objective and constraint function for the multi-port loading optimization problem. At the end of this chapter, the loading experimental results illustrate that the method is effectively.2)Research on multi-port master bay plan problem of large container ships on ocean-going mainlines.Aiming at the problem of multiple port master bay plan optimization,a mixed integer programming model was proposed. The objective is to minimize the number of re-handles and the total berthing time while maintaining the main stability and stress moments of the ship dynamically. The stowage of heavy and lengthy cargoes cargo, reefer containers and 45-foot container are also considered.Stack is used to instead the cargo hold as the basic unit in this programming model. The multi-port container loading strategy is added in stack stowage. The calculation experiment verifies the validity of the model.3)Heuristic bay layout algorithm for large container ships. The problem of bay layout optimization in the cargo hold is solved and the precise stability of the ship is calculated on the basis of the stowage result of the stage master bay plan optimization. The proposed heuristic bay layout optimization algorithm is objective to minimize the difference between the target stability value and the calculated value. The algorithm consists of two steps, initial solution generating and iterative optimization. The algorithm can solve the problem of re-handles caused by special containers’ loading, and iteratively adjust the ship stability value to a reasonable range. The effectiveness of the algorithm is verified through a series of loading experiment.
