A Study On The Design Evolution Adapted To The Traditional Chinese Curved Roof In Modern Period(1910s-1930s)with The View On History Of Technology

As the material carrier of social spirit and culture,architecture is regarded as a representation of various information of time.Chinese modern society has gone through a complex and conflictive process under the radical change in the global context.Affected by the Western Industrial Revolution,a large number of new western construction techniques,science,materials have been produced and developed.The absorption,transformation,re-creation of Chinese architecture by western science reflects the interaction and conflict between Chinese and Western construction technology and cultural in the times.The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is an early excellent project of Chinese architects exploring national forms.It has a clear and typical significance of the times and retains a wealth of historical information.At the same time,the publication of the precious and detailed historical archives of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum provides an excellent opportunity for us to study Mausoleum and even Chinese architecture in modern period.Chinese roofs reflect the logic of Chinese architecture in both structure and form,especially the traditional Chinese curved roof.How to adapt to the roof form under the conditions of Western construction technology? It is the core problem in the modern transformation and evolution of Chinese architecture.Ginling College and the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum are projects of the same time,and there is a great connection between them.In the representation of the roof design,the two cases used western materials and technical methods to achieve the translation of traditional Chinese architecture.It embodied the evolution process of collision and integration between Chinese and Western cultures and technologies in modern period.The comparative study of roof design through the two projects will help us deepen our understanding of the technological promotion of Chinese architecture in modern period.The dissertation is based on the detailed historical archives of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum,with the methods of the identification of the original drawings,the research of literature,combined with the onsite surveying to analyze the roof design of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum from the views on history of technology.The dissertation compares it with Ginling College from three levels: structural system,appearance,material and structure.The research analyzes the connections and differences between the two projects,explores the reasons behind them,and then speculates on the architects’ design intentions,and regards the development of modern Chinese architectural history from the views on history of technology.The whole thesis contains about 40,800 words,106 pictures and charts.
