The construction, development and maturity of the city are an important basis for recording the regional culture of the city and the formation of the country,an important relic of the study of the social culture at that time, and an important crystallization of recording its regional characteristics and civilization.Studying the historical cities in the area can understand the historical and cultural development process of the area, further explore its historical and cultural characteristics, provide evidence for the current historical research in the area, and even supplement its missing links;by exploring the origin, development and evolution of its historical cities,It then provides a scientific reference basis for contemporary urban construction and planning;it can further explore local characteristic culture, adapt measures to local conditions, provide reference for local economic, cultural and industrial development, and have certain practical guiding significance for its current and future development direction. The Ordos region is located at the intersection of farming and nomadic peoples,on the southern bank of the "ji" bay of the Yellow River in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, surrounded by the Yellow River on three sides, and is the core location of the Ordos Plateau. It has a long history and is one of the birthplaces of human civilization. The Sarawusu culture and bronze culture have a long history;it is an active stage for the northern nomads, where the Central Plains civilization and nomadic culture blend together.Because of its unique geographical conditions and humanistic background,it has become a "competitive place for military strategists" in the past dynasties. It has been alternately ruled by the Central Plains regime and ethnic minorities. Its city construction is advancing and developing in a roundabout way with distinctive characteristics. This article takes the current administrative area of Ordos City as the research area and historical cities as the research object;through combing the development background of city construction in this area, select the late Neolithic years to the end of Ming and Qing Dynasties(about 10,000 years ago to 1912 AD)In order to study the time range;based on reading historical books and related documents written by predecessors, and through field research, combined with archaeological data,we have sorted out 60 historical cities that have been discovered and located in the area. Then, according to the general law of the historical development of our country,in chronological order,it is divided into the pre-Qin stage(late Neolithic to before 221 BC),the Qin and Han stages(221 BC to 220 BC),the Wei,Jin,Southern and Northern Dynasties(BC From 220 to 581 AD),Sui and Tang stages(581AD to 907 AD),Song Liaoxi,Xia,Yuan,Ming and Qing stages(907 AD to 1912 AD),five stages were used to conduct a phased study.First, with historical analysis as the basic research method, the historical background of each stage is studied and sorted out,and the formation and development of historical cities are analyzed.Secondly, through field research and the collection and sorting of related documents, and using satellite positioning and computer graphics, the summary of the historical city is summarized and sorted. Then summarized the development characteristics of historical city construction at various stages. Finally, through the study of the distribution characteristics, location characteristics, scale characteristics, and functional characteristics of the city in the area, the overall characteristics are summarized, and the characteristics of the formation and development of the historical city construction in the area are finally summarized.Through research,it is concluded that the distribution of historical cities in this area shows "uneven time distribution and balanced spatial distribution";the site selection is affected by many factors, among which mountains and rivers are more affected;there is no large-scale city. The number of cities shows a stepwise decrease with the scale, and the number of large-scale cities is smaller than the number of small and medium-sized cities. The number of cities dominated by "military" and cities dominated by "politics" are equal, and some cities have strong commercial functions. On the whole, the historical cities in this area have distinct frontier regional characteristics. The development of cities is uneven and unbalanced, and the scale is small. Most cities have military functions and focus on defensive effects in site selection. In the end,it is concluded that its historical city construction and development are closely related to the political and cultural background of the region, and have strong border and regional cultural characteristics.
