| The nationwide renovation of old neighborhoods is both an opportunity and a challenge for the construction of third places in old neighborhoods, and the importance and unique significance of third places for old neighborhoods in mountainous areas makes the study of third places in the context of old neighborhoods in mountainous areas even more valuable. This theis takes the third place in mountainous old neighborhoods as the research object and focuses on three questions: First, how to identify the third place? Second, what is the current situation of the third place in mountainous old neighborhoods? Thirdly, what suggestions in terms of urban design can be found to optimize the third place in those districts? In response to the above questions, this thesis are constructed in the following manners. The first chapter is the background study, which explains the significance of the study of third place in old mountainous communities in the context of the nationwide renovation of old communities. Then the key concepts of "old mountainous communities" and "third place" in this theis is defined, and the research questions are proposed. The second and third chapters are the basic researches. The second chapter composes the literature related to the third place and residential space for interaction in the old mountainous districts, and provides the theoretical support for the research. The third chapter adopts the Rooted Theory Methodology, which constructs the framework of the third place investigation in terms of the properties of the third place and the spatial properties. This thesis selects six typical mountainous old neighborhoods in Yuzhong District of Chongqing as the object of investigation.Chapter 4 is an empirical study.Based on the third place properties, the third places are identified and then the spatial properties of the identified third places are investigated. The current characteristics and problems of the third places in the mountainous old neighborhoods are analyzed through cross-sectional comparison.Chapter 5 is the strategy research.Strategy from three levels—site selection, functional configuration, and spatial design—are proposed to optimize the construction and useage of third places in three types of mountainous old neighborhoods respectively.Chapter 6 concludes this thesis and reveals the restrictions of this study.Four main findings and three research innovations of this study are sorted out,and the subsequent research in this field is suggested. |
