With the introduction of the concept of smart cities,Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks(VANETs)are used to obtain information on road conditions, traffic congestion, vehicle speed, and location to improve traffic safety and efficiency.Among them, the vehicle can be used as a collector of road conditions to help the trusted authority(Trusted Authority, referred to as TA)monitor road conditions. However, the messages of VANETs based on wireless communication are easily intercepted, tampered with,or even forged by attackers, and VANETs need to resist the above attacks through privacy protection and security authentication mechanisms before deployment.Besides, the delay of message transmission and processing may cause high-speed vehicles to lose contact with the complex and changeable VANETs,and efficiency and cost also need to be considered in privacy protection authentication. Therefore, these papers study the lightweight privacy protection authentication scheme in the road condition monitoring system of VANETs.The main work and contributions include the following two aspects.1)A lightweight hash function-based privacy protection authentication scheme(LPH-RCM) is proposed, which only uses the hash function and exclusive OR operation to ensure the reliability and integrity of road condition information. At the same time, the one-time anonymous identity is used to protect the privacy of the vehicle, and the update of the anonymous identity does not rely on an ideal tamper-proof device(TPD).Also, the safety proof and analysis show that LPH-RCM can meet the safety requirements of VANETs.Finally, the performance evaluation shows that the calculation and communication overhead of the scheme is low.2)A lightweight edge node-based privacy protection authentication scheme(LPE-RCM)is proposed, which uses edge nodes to perform equality tests on the road conditions collected by vehicles to filter repeated road condition information, thereby reducing the burden of the TA.At the same time,to encourage vehicles to actively report road conditions,LPE-RCM uses a reputation mechanism with privacy protection to return rewards to anonymous target vehicles. Finally, the security proof and performance analysis of LPE-RCM show that LPE-RCM can meet the security and privacy requirements of VANETs,and has low computing and communication overhead.
