Old building renovation gains its popularity when we are entering the new normal of China’s economy.Unlike historical architecture with cultural values,general non-protected buildings are often neglected the age vale they have,for example,buildings like campus architectures which represent the genius loci of the campus are worthy of renovation and reuse.In order to let old building fulfill its destiny,transform and upgrade,this research focuses on the design strategies of renovation and reuse.Based on the real project of renovation design of Road and Bridge Lab in SEU,this research is conducted by four levels according to life span,which are place,structure,program and infill,together with the support of literature review,case study and survey.Under the guidelines of preserving historical context and meeting the requirements of disciplinary development,this paper systematically examines the design principles and put forward problem-oriented strategies respectively for each level.At place level,attention should be paid to the continuation of the environment.In terms of physical environment,the strategy of “new and old juxtaposed: isomorphic rebuilding” is proposed to keep the campus space form,and the “new in old: embedded infilling” strategy is raised not to increase the building density.In terms of cultural place,the strategy of "preserving empathy elements" is put forward to recall the place memory.At structure level,stress should be placed on the symbiotic relationship between the new and old structure.This paper introduces strategy of "the new being independent of the old: response and concession" to deal with different loads and flexible change,"the new being dependent of the old: borrow and attach" to realize the attached spatial relationship,and "respect the old:exposure" to highlight the characteristics of the old structure.At program level,focus should be anchored on the integration of existing space and new program.The research comes up with two-step strategy,which is "existing space matching new program,and new program inspiring new place".To be more specific.the new program should be adaptively placed together with flow lines organization being transitionally optimized,and next,place-making of key node space and communication between space should be promoted;Finally,at infill level,emphasis is laid on interior design,performance upgrades and material authenticity.The strategy of "contrasting the new material with the old" is generated to enrich the expression layers by comparison,"equipment and pipeline comprehension" strategy is brought up to ensure continuity of the interior space,and "retaining construction information" strategy is propounded to make the renovation readable teaching props.Combined with the whole process of project design,construction drawing design and interior design,this paper conducts in-depth discussion on four levels,and proposes principles and strategies for renovation design respectively,which satisfy the demands of campus building renewal and provide some reference for future research.
